About World Robot Olympiad

World Robot Olympiad or WRO is an international robotics competition with teams from over 75 countries around the world.

Students are divided by grades, where each year they work in teams of 2-3 to solve a themed challenge the host country creates. This year Canada is playing host to the theme of ‘Climate Squad” where team will have to develop robots that will allow us to adapt and help us overcome the increasingly frequent climatic hazards. ​ 

Season Starts March 3rd and Runs until the May 16th Competition. 
One Parent, required to oversee the team during their meeting times.

Why WRO? 

Robots will have to complete tasks on a 4’x8’ Table using LEGO robotics. This is very similar to FIRST LEGO League with a few differences. 

Teams are only 2-3 Students per team.
The day of the competition, there is no coach or mentor interaction with team/s.
Students must build robots from memory during a morning build time
Robots have to fit within a sizing cube to start
Teams get to only start the robot/program once (With the Exception of the WeDo Category)
Programming is more focused on Sensors and using higher level of programming to get tasks done. 

This gets students more involved and set on a creative path pushing them outside of their comfort zones getting them to use high level problem solving skills.

WeDo 2.0  (2nd - 4th)

​Teams use WeDo 2.0 robots for this years game ‘Forest Fire Rescue’ in which teams must rescue people, put out fires and plant new trees.  

Elementary (5th - 6th)

​Teams use EV3 robots for this years game, ‘Windstorm’ in which teams must clear fallen trees, deliver emergency supplies and restore power. 

Junior High  (7th - 9th)

​Teams use EV3 robots for this years game, ‘Snowstorm’ in which teams must clear streets, move cars and put abrasive material on the streets.
